Why I Am Running

January 11, 2008

I am running for Mayor because Florence needs a change in leadership, and I have the right vision for our city and the people. It’s that simple.

You know I will listen to you, and I’ve worked hard to make sure your voices are heard at City Hall. As I listen, I keep hearing the same thing all over Florence: people are disappointed. Remember “Vote ‘em All Out”? The citizens of Florence rose up to change City Hall in 2004, sending a loud and clear message: the people wanted a new approach to city government. And beyond that, the people wanted a new attitude on the part of elected officials, one friendly and honest to them.

Unfortunately, City Hall is still run the same old way, with an agenda that’s not always in the people’s interest. The special interests get the lion’s share of attention. Why? Well, for one thing, they’re the primary source of campaign funds. Citizens feel that their leaders have lost touch with them and feel shut out of their own government.

I don’t want that to happen to me. I don’t ever want to get too big for my britches and lose touch. You are my special interest. I represent you. The people of Florence and the overall good of the city are what motivate me.

On day one of my term in office as mayor, the days of “who-you-know” and “business as usual” will end. My office door will open to citizens. Our existing businesses, big and small, are the economic foundation and backbone of this community – and I will never forget that as I work to bring in new businesses.

I have a vision for Florence as a progressive, growing, and thriving community. We can have a bigger job base if we attract new kinds of jobs and support the jobs we already have. I will use my contacts around the state and nation, work with other local leaders, and together with you, we can all make it happen. We can change our city and our region. I have experience in private business and public service and these experiences make me well suited to serve as Mayor of Florence.

I love Florence and its people. We need a change in leadership, and we deserve one. Positive change we can believe in and count on. Leadership with vision. It’s that simple.

I like the way Scott keeps his yard signs out of the public right-of-way. Sure wish his opponent would be as considerate of the city.

Thank you Matt. We try to be careful about signs out of consideration for the public. I thank all my supporters and signs are part of it. We make every effort to do it right.

Thanks Scott for giving your time and allowing me to take you on personal visits to friends and family’s homes to discuss and ansewer questions concerning our city. They always call and thank me for bringing you into their homes.

I appreciate that Mark. It is always great to speak with and listen to our citizens. Getting to know them personally is a treat and helps me do my job better. It’s their city; it’s all of our’s city; and bonding with the people is what makes public service so special.
